In the early morning hours, just as the sun rises over the rooftops of Venice, life on Piazza San Marco begins to stir. The photo series captures this particular moment in which the city wakes from its Sleeping Beauty slumber.

The first tourists are already out and about, their silhouettes blurring against the backdrop of the majestic buildings. Although you never quite have the square to yourself, a very special atmosphere prevails at this hour. The calm of the night slowly gives way to the bustle of the day, and you can almost feel Venice drawing breath for the coming rush of visitors.

The pictures show Piazza San Marco in an in-between state – no longer asleep, but not yet fully awake. They reveal the particular charm of early morning in Venice, when the city is reluctant to give up its secrets and anticipation of the new day hangs in the air.
